The purpose of South Edinburgh Healthy Living Initiative
(SEHLI) is defined in our mission statement, 'To co-ordinate
and build the capacity of the South Edinburgh community
to address health issues holistically and secure sustainable
health benefits'.
SEHLI has a steering group responsible for overseeing
the success of this initiative, which comprises representatives
from the local community, voluntary and statutory sectors.
This group has been successful in obtaining National
Lottery and Local Partnership funding to take this exciting
new initiative forward.
The initiative will focus on a number of key areas
identified by the local community. These include:
Healthy Eating
We are working
with local people to develop and deliver a series of
cookery courses looking at cooking for yourself and
your family on a budget. We are also trying to
improve access to good quality nutritious food by developing
food co-ops, community cafes and ensuring that workers
and local people are aware of the importance of a balanced
diet and how to achieve it.
Active Lifestyles
Taking pleasure
in active leisure!
People in
South Edinburgh have the opportunity to participate
in a variety of free activities to suit all ages and
abilities. An active lifestyle doesn't mean sweating
it out in the gym five days a week. Take a walk
with the South City Strollers or get fit in the Green
Gym. There are also opportunities to get on your
bike with some cycle training sessions. For people
who would like to further their career prospects in
Active Living, free training opportunities and volunteer
roles are also available.
Healthy Homes
'Healthy Homes'
aim is to raise the awareness of the effects of cold
and damp housing on the health of young children, the
elderly, long term sick and disabled people. We
offer advice and assistance in collaboration with local
agencies to help reduce this problem. Activities
range from public awareness energy efficiency sessions
to the development of a home improvement grant scheme.
Family Life
We will work
with parents/carers of children under 16yrs to look
at taking time out for themselves and find ways of coping
with daily stresses, including stress management courses
and support groups.
A new mobile
play service for parents with children under 5 will
be driving its way to South Edinburgh. It is a
double decker bus (The Octobus) and has been adapted
to function as a mini-nursery. Watch your local
press for details!
Community Health Action
Why not work
together to promote good health and well being.....
It makes good
business sense to pool our resources together - time,
energy, local knowledge as well as funds! Community
Health Action will build on the positive work already
happening as well as offer new opportunities to become
involved in issues which have an effect on our health.
Activities range from involvement in Community Health
Action Network to assisting in the development of South
Edinburgh Uncut, a local directory.
